Which ski-hire level is right for me?

Alpy.com uses a simple 3★ to 6★ equipment scale. Not every rental shop offers all four categories, but these descriptions give you a useful starting point.

Beginner

3★

Who it's for: New skiers or anyone still building confidence.

On the slopes: Mainly gentle pistes, concentrating on easy turns and control.

Equipment: Forgiving skis that are easy to manoeuvre and don't punish small mistakes.

Intermediate

4★

Who it's for: Comfortable linking parallel turns on blue and easier red runs.

On the slopes: Skiing at moderate speeds and starting to explore steeper or more varied terrain.

Equipment: Stable, versatile and predictable all-mountain skis.

Advanced

5★

Who it's for: Confident, experienced skiers across groomed red and black runs.

On the slopes: Stronger carving, higher speeds and more demanding snow conditions.

Equipment: More responsive skis with stronger edge grip and stability.

Expert

6★

Who it's for: Highly experienced skiers comfortable across varied terrain.

On the slopes: Piste, powder, bumps, steep terrain or specialist skiing depending on preference.

Equipment: Top-tier equipment matched more specifically to how and where you want to ski.

A few tips for choosing your equipment

Ski length

Your height is a useful starting point, but weight, ability, skiing style and the ski itself matter too. Shorter skis are generally easier to turn; longer skis generally offer more stability.

Boot fit

Your toes may lightly touch the front while standing upright and pull back slightly as you flex forward. Your heel should feel securely held. Ski boots should feel snug, not painfully crushing.

Give accurate details

Your height, weight, age, skiing ability and boot details may be used when equipment and bindings are set up, so answer the fitting questions accurately.

Don't suffer in silence.

If your skis don't feel right, ask the shop whether they can swap them. And if your boots are genuinely painful after you've skied for a while, go back and speak to the fitting team. A week of uncomfortable boots is a very long week.
