Holiday types

Different ways to do a ski holiday

Chalet, apartment, hotel, all-inclusive or a complete ski package - start with the type you had in mind, then see what else might suit you.

Chalets

Chalets put your whole group under one roof - no corridors, no strangers at breakfast, just your party and the mountain. Most are exclusive use, booked out entirely for your group, though a handful offer selected weeks by the room if you'd rather not fill - or pay for - the whole place. Sleeping anywhere from six to twenty, they suit families, groups of friends and multi-generation trips who'd rather share a living room than a hotel lobby.

Catered chalets come with a host or chef on hand: breakfast, afternoon tea and a three- or four-course dinner most nights, usually with wine included. It's the closest thing skiing has to being looked after all week - you ski hard, come home, and dinner's already sorted.

Self-catered chalets give you the space and the privacy without the set mealtimes, and cost less as a result. Some come with the option to add a private chef for one night or the whole week, or to arrange local meal deliveries - so you're not locked into cooking every evening if you'd rather not.

Hotels

Hotels bring the facilities that chalets and apartments usually can't - daily housekeeping, on-site restaurants and bars, and often a pool, spa or gym to fall into after a big day on the slopes. Star ratings and facilities vary considerably, from simple, friendly three-stars to five-star properties with the full spa-and-fine-dining treatment, so it's worth checking what's actually included before you compare on price alone.

Hotels also offer a choice of board options, so you can pick how much of the week's eating you want sorted for you:

Room only

Just the room; you eat out or self-cater snacks, giving you the most freedom with evenings.

Bed & breakfast

Breakfast included, dinners out or in resort - good for groups who want to explore the village's restaurants.

Half-board

The Firefly team brings decades of first-hand experience across the world’s leading ski and villa destinations.

Hotels also tend to offer more flexible travel dates than chalets, so if a Saturday-to-Saturday week doesn't suit your group, a hotel is usually the easiest way round it.

Apartments

Apartments are the flexible, budget-friendly option: your own kitchen, your own space, and the freedom to eat when and where you like - whether that's cooking in most nights or eating out and treating the kitchen as a backup.

They suit couples, small groups and families who want privacy and value without the structure - or cost - of catered accommodation, and are usually the most affordable way to get ski-in/ski-out or a central location.

All-inclusive

All-inclusive does exactly what it says: accommodation, meals, drinks and a set of activities all bundled into one upfront price, so there's very little to pay once you're out there. It suits anyone who'd rather know the full cost before they travel than tot up bar and lunch bills through the week.

Why families often love it

Club Med is the name most closely associated with this style of holiday, and for good reason - their resorts pair genuinely good all-inclusive food and drink with supervised kids' clubs and, in many cases, ski lessons and lift passes bundled into the price too. It's a strong fit for families and mixed-ability groups with many non-skiers, where knowing the whole week is covered - childcare included - counts for a lot.

Ski packages

A package takes the planning off your hands: flights, transfers and accommodation, sorted in one booking rather than several. It's the option for anyone who'd rather book once and be done, instead of piecing together flights, transfers and a place to stay separately.

We work with established package operators to offer this style of holiday alongside our chalets, apartments and hotels - so if having everything bundled and pre-arranged matters more to you than building the trip piece by piece, this is the route to take.
